Multitasking was a much need addition to the iPhone 4 and is arguably still the one major advance missing from the iPad.

The majority of gadget geeks are men and we simply cannot do more than one thing at at time according to our better halves. What they don’t realise is firstly, that we prefer to do a single job and do it properly and, more importantly, if we had wanted to multitask we would have stayed single. It’s not that we can’t do it, we just prefer not to!

Beyond that, most women struggle with setting up a video recorder (before the days of Sky+), let alone doing anything more on a mobile than sending a thumb numbing volume of useless texts.

I’d be interested to hear from any women who’d like to share their view on the subject, maybe they could post whilst doing the ironing?

Gone are the days when Apple took seven to ten days to send out the iPad. That doesn’t sound long but a watched clock always seems to stop, particularly when it is such an amazing piece of kit that you are waiting for.

Apple have just announced that online orders will be fulfilled within 24 hours. That includes all of the model range, notably the Wi-Fi versions.

Shipping time is one thing but the cost hasn’t come down. Never fear though, as we reported earlier in the year, Gadgets4nowt is promoting an iPad giveaway that means you can get an iPad for free with a minimum of effort.

The world’s largest Apple shop is set to open in London’s Covent Garden.

Some people have already begun queueing; the shop opens its doors at 1000 BST….An Apple executive said it was “a big moment” for the firm as this would be its 300th storebut will they be giving away a free iPhone 4 like we can!

An estimated 5,000 people waited outside Regent Street when it opened for the first time in November 2004.

There have regularly been overnight queues since then as new products were launched.

However, there were many complaints about the most recent of these gadgets, the iPhone 4, with the handset’s signal strength often draining when it was held in a certain way.

Last month Apple offered a free “bumper” case to everyone who had bought a phonein an attempt to overcome the problem.

The new store in central London has about 300 employees.

The actor and writer Stephen Fry, renowned as one of the company’s devotees, wrote on his Twitter feed that the shop’s prestigious address – No 1, The Plaza, Covent Garden – meant that “if all goes wrong, Apple will survive as real-estate owners”.

Work and the World Cup football have got in the way of me having much time on the iPad since it arrived on Saturday but my initial thoughts are positive.My wife, who is technophobic, and daughter, who desperately wants her own iPad, are both impressed too, which is always a good thing!

Let’s not forget that it is a free iPad so I am not influenced by the cost. If I had to pay the full £400+, then my views may be completely different.

I wasn’t feeling too special for a number of reasons when the door went at 9.00am on Saturday morning, 19th June but boy was I glad I dragged myself out of bed. You beauty!

Apple CEO Steve Jobs says the company actually developed the iPad before the iPhone, but put the tablet project on the shelf once he decided to launch the phone first.

That’s just one of the newsy bits the Apple chief provided in a long interview with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the the D: All Things Digital conference, which got under way Tuesday night in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

Eric Savitz at Barrons blogged the entire conversation live and here are a few of the key takeaways from the conversation:

• As noted, Jobs said the company actually was working on a touch-screen tablet – the iPad – but decided to first apply the technology to the mobile phone market, and so launched the free iPhone 4G  first.
• Jobs says Apple was within 90 days of going bankrupt when he returned the company from Next; he says the company was actually much worse off than he had expected at the time.
• Jobs gave yet another spirited defense of the company’s refusal to support Adobe (ADBE) Flash, and continued to say that HTML5 is a better technology for video.
• On the subject of the lost/stolen iPhone prototype, Jobs says the person who actually called the police to report the phone was stolen was a friend of the person who ended up with the phone.
• Jobs said the company has no plan to pull Google Maps from the iPhone, despite the competition between the two companies.
• Jobs declined to talk about adding new carriers; he also gave a fairly robust defense of AT&T, noting that the company has taken steps to improve the network, but that the nature of network improvements is that conditions often get worse before they get better. He also said that AT&T’s efforts to improve the network have been hurt by equipment shortages.
• Jobs says Apple has no plans to enter the search market.
• Jobs says that Apple approves 95% of iPad applications within 7 days.
• He made it clear that gaming was an important feature of the iPad/iPhone environment.
• And in what may have been the most interesting discussion of the session, Jobs said the trouble with trying to fix what is wrong with the interface for television is the fact that the cable industry basically gives away DVRs for free or low cost. Jobs said there isn’t a good “go to market strategy” for a new TV interface. This was reminiscent to some statements made at the same conference prior to the debut of the iPhone in which he complained about the role of the carriers in the mobile phone business; in short, it made some people wonder if Apple wasn’t plotting a strategy for a new way to interact with televisions.
