Sync Your iPhone to iTunes Wirelessly
Category: iPhone Accessories, iPhone News, TechnologyQuestion: what’s better than syncing iTunes using a USB cable and but yet isn’t allowed by Apple?
You got it: wireless syncing. And that’s why we’re saddened to hear that the originally named app ‘Wi-Fi Sync’ was rejected from the App Store. Fear not though, because it’s now up for sale on the Cydia Store.
Obviously you’re going to have to jailbreak your device in order to get hold of Wi-Fi Sync from Cydia. Let’s face it, though, you’re likely to have done that anyway, if only to sink your teeth into such tasty Cydia-based apps as SBSettings and Backgrounder.
Wi-Fi Sync’s developer is asking $9.99 (about £7) which isn’t extortionate. Although considering this ability should be available anyway it is slightly annoying. The only issue with Wi-Fi sync is that it’s Mac-only for the moment as it requires a piece of server software installed on your system to function. Arguably that just means it’s reserved for the truly devoted-to-Jobs of this world, but it’s a sore point for Windows users nonetheless.
Apparently a Windows version of the software is under development, with a release scheduled within eight to 10 weeks time. Once that’s available your $9.99 will buy you both versions, which is a nice concession.
According to Greg Hughes, the maker of Wi-Fi Sync: “While [an Apple rep] agreed that the app doesn’t technically break the rules, he said that it does encroach upon the boundaries of what they can and cannot allow on their store. He also cited security concerns.” Unsurprisingly, Apple being Apple, further elaboration isn’t exactly forthcoming.
It would be nice to think that the motivation for this rejection is that Apple is taking note and will have this feature built into the next iPhone OS. If a third party developer can do it, surely Apple’s developers can manage the same, and better? With our cynical hats on, however, we’re not holding our breath.

Seems jailbreak apps are outdoing apple’s. The fact they’re also free can’t be bad

BUYER BEWARE – Do NOT expect ANY support from Greg Hughes if you encounter any problems with his Wi-Fi Sync software. I purchased the Windows version of Greg’s Wi-Fi Sync software and attempted to install on several PC’s with the same results “application failed to start”. I submitted a friendly trouble ticket on Greg’s support site over a month ago and Greg has made NO attempt to respond. A second trouble ticket also went unanswered as did a request for a refund. PayPal will only assist if the software was purchased via EBay, not Cydia. Jay Freeman of Cydia also didn’t respond to my email requesting assistance. BUYER BEWARE!
ADMIN EDIT – Everyone is entitled to their view, I’d love to hear from anyone else who has comments about the product, both positive and negative.
Great idea. I always have to look through my mess to find the cable. This is a simple solution that works just the same. Thanks
I jailbroke my iPhone for wifi sync. It was great when it worked but most of the time, especially when I was in a rush to step out, it wouldn’t sync properly.
Good thing Apple decided to put this on iOS 5 now. Can’t wait for it!!
Does anyone know if iOS5 will work on the iPhone 3gs?
Yay!! Thanks so much for the info! I am excited to look further into the software.
