iPhone Apps Delayed By BBC

BBC news and sport iPhone applications were postponed today after the BBC bowed to industry calls for a review of their implementation.

The Trust’s management said it plans to evaluate projects for a number of applications for the iPhone. The news app was due out in April 2010 followed by the sport app in May, as an expansion of existing services.  However, earlier this month, the Newspaper Publishers Association complained about the applications, saying that the plans would make it impossible for others to establish economic models on the iPhone.

“There is still some uncertainty about the possible importance of the question whether [the plans for the BBC] is a modification of service,” admitted the BBC Trust today.

One commentator suggested that the fact the BBC is only planning apps for the iPhone is a measure of the Apple-centricity of the organisation, which allows the American multi-national corporation to escape the keen scrutiny that would normally be trained on such an organisation.

For those of use who love the BBC and the iPhone, let’s just hope the apps are delayed, not postponed.
